Day 06 – SERENGETI – NGORONGORO CRATER
The sun rises over Serengeti, and we’re up for an early breakfast and a last glimpse of the park’s countless game as you get ready to drive the dazzlingly scenic route through a wildlife wonderland to the Ngorongoro Crater. You arrive at the Lodge/camp in time for Lunch. The rest of the afternoon is at leisure.
Discover the iconic Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater, which is the central attraction in the area, is the largest Caldera in the world that has its walls intact. The Ngorongoro Crater floor, a sheer drop of 610 metres below the crater rim, has an area of 304 sq. km, with a diameter of 19 km. The sight of the Ngorongoro Crater is simply stunning. “It is impossible to give a fair description of the size and beauty of the Crater, for there is nothing with which one can compare it. It is one of the Wonders of the World…” once wrote Professor Bernhard Grzimek. The crater floor is home to tens of thousands of plains animals, including wildebeest, zebra, gazelles, elands, and a large predator population of lions, hyena and jackal which can all be viewed at close quarters. The rare black rhino can be viewed here, and if you are lucky, you can see cheetah and leopard. The rainy season is between November and May. The altitude at the crater rim is about 2286 meters above sea level, and temperatures can get quite chilly in the evening, especially between May to September.
Day 07 – NGORONGORO – MANYARA
Today you will descend 2,000 feet into this ancient collapsed volcano, passing through lush rainforest and thick vegetation, on our way to the largest concentration of animals in Africa. A variety of environments—grassland, swamps, forests and lakes—yield a staggering variety of animals: lions, zebras, buffaloes, rhinos, elephants, gazelles and wildebeests just to name a few. And because the grass is short, it is definitely easy to spot the remarkable creatures here… each turn of the head brings an exciting new vista. Afternoon ascend the crater rim and drive to Manyara arriving in the afternoon. Evening spend at leisure as you enjoy the view of the lake Manyara sunset.
